Handmade functional stoneware since 1973.
John Onkka has been making stoneware pottery for over fifty years. The last thirty of those years have been spent at my home and studio in Baldwin, Wisconsin. I’m thankful to the local people who have supported my work throughout the years and am proud to have Onkka Pottery used and displayed in homes, churches, and public spaces in the midwest.
All of my pottery is hand thrown on a wheel or slab built, and fired to over 2300 degrees Fahrenheit in a handmade kiln. I also make many of the simple tools that I use daily on my work.
Using local materials is important to my work. I make my ash glazes from wood that I burn or collect from friends. I also clean and prepare local red clay to make the stamps that I use on many of my pieces.
